Newsletter #8
Hello Wolverine Fans!
We are now a month removed from the 2022
season and right in the swing of summer.
The college athletic model has changed significantly in the last few
years with the addition of the transfer portal, NIL sponsorships, and
eligibility waivers through COVID and other routes that are unique to this
era. It is a dynamic time as the
landscape changes and the Utah Valley Baseball program is moving forward
through the thick of it. Here is a look
at what is going on inside the program.
2022
Season Recap
The 2022 season was an exciting step forward
for the Wolverines. The program tallied
19 wins and was in the hunt for a postseason bid until the final weekend of the
season. There were several highlights on
the season including wins over Texas State, Utah, and a mid week sweep over
Mountain West Champion UNLV. Other
accomplishments include:
-Toughest strength of schedule in program
history
-Most home runs since 2010
-Most stolen bases since 2012
-First team since 2012 with two hitters with an OPS over .900
-Most wins since 2016
-Most WAC wins since 2016
-Highest winning percentage since 2016
-Highest WAC winning percentage since 2016
-Best fielding percentage since 2016
-First player with an OPS over 1.000 since 2017
-84 spot leap in RPI – 20th best in Division 1 Baseball
Sims sets
all time program career record for throwing out would-be base stealers
In the last game of the season Drew Sims
threw out two would-be base stealers.
This accounted for 62 runners thrown out in his career which set an all
time Utah Valley record for a catcher.
Sims also made an impact with his bat in his final game as a Wolverine
capped off with a home run deep to left field.
WAC
has record year
For the first time since 2012 the Western
Athletic Conference sent two teams to the NCAA Baseball Tournament. The conference has been revitalized in
baseball with the addition of six schools from the baseball rich state of Texas
and the constant improvement of teams within the conference. Grand Canyon’s at large bid allowed the WAC
to join the ACC, SEC, Big 12, Pac-12, Sun Belt, ASUN, Big Ten, Conference USA,
Missouri Valley, and WCC as multi bid leagues.
It was also the best conference RPI the WAC has recorded since 2013 seasons
finishing as the 19th best conference in Division 1 baseball, ahead
of formidable conference foes such as the Big West (20), Atlantic 10 (21), and
the MAC (22).
