Newsletter #7
We have reached the midway point of the
season and have racked up 12 wins including a weekend series win at Seattle this
past weekend. Like every season, it is a
season with many stories and highlights.
With the weather warming up and a full slate of games over the next 6
weeks, we hope that you can make it to UCCU Ballpark to enjoy Utah Valley
Baseball. Here is a look at some things
going on around the program
Alumni
Day - Saturday, April 16
On Saturday, April 16 all former Utah Valley
Baseball players are invited to attend the game against Dixie State. There will be a tailgate before the game as
well as a facility tour and recognition of the 10 year anniversary of Utah
Valley Baseball’s 32 game winning streak in 2012. RSVP today to join the festivities by
emailing alison.fillmore@uvu.edu.
Sims shines
on the mound
A major highlight has been the emergence of
Nick Sims as one of the premier pitchers in the country. So far this season, he has appeared in 9
games of which Utah Valley has won 8.
His 9 appearances have led to a 1.12 ERA, 5-0 record and 2 saves. He has been a selfless piece to an improving
pitching staff and even more remarkably, he has a 0.57 ERA in conference games
with a perfect 4-0 record.
Improvement
on all facets
At this point in the season, the improvement
in the Wolverines is apparent. The 12
wins already match the average win total for the program since 2017 and improvements
can be found on every side of the baseball.
On the mound, Utah Valley is pitching at a 6.48 ERA and allowing just
7.0 runs per game. Offensively, the
Wolverines have an OPS of .754 and are averaging 5.2 runs per game. This is up from a .639 OPS and 3.8 runs per
game just a year ago.
Moralez
paces the offense
The offensive improvement experienced by Utah
Valley can be attributed in large part to Mitch Moralez. The senior is batting .388 with an OPS of 1.006
on the season including 4 home runs.
This is improved from his 2021 campaign in which he started every game
and led the team with a .274 average and posted a .676 OPS.
Transfers
make huge contributions
In the new landscape of the NCAA the
Wolverines have benefited from the advent of the transfer portal. At the plate, transfers Paul Vossen, Trey
Cutchen, Copper Hansen, Cole Jordan, and Brody Ponti have all played vital roles
in improving the OPS of the team. On the
mound, Coop Rust has started 6 games and holds a 4.22 ERA with Josh Brown
manning the bullpen with a 4.50 ERA and 3 saves on the season.
